They are Us

Recently a Hollywood film depicting the events of the Terrorist attack on Christchurch, New Zealand has had its early draft leaked to the public by the media and boy what a script.

The Muslim community and the families of the attack find it disgusting and there is also discontent from some in the wider community that also share this view.

Here are 5 reasons they have

NUMBER ONE: The Movie glides over details of the event and in many cases completely fabricated the events that happened, a father and son dying in each others arms for example, when the wife of the victim replied her son was not even at the mosque at the same time his father died.

Though a small example, it begins to unravel the concept of the film that this is not a tribute but simply a writers attempt to create a story that intrigues and envelops no care for the subjects of his story, the producers interested only in whether it will sell out in the box office, The Actors self-interest in being attached to a story related to the globally popular Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern

NUMBER TWO: The Mosque Sequence, there are 17 pages in the script that detail the massacre from people getting gunned down in a blaze of fire to other worshipers that shout ” Allahu Akbar” meaning God is Great before they die. The scences are detailed and explicit, overdramatised and played out in a way that gives the shooter an air of terrifying mystery.

17 pages of scriptwriting can generally be time scaled as around 17 minutes of the movie according to some observers. For those that are unaware the terrorist live streamed his massacre on Facebook the video was shared and streamed millions of times before authorities managed to restrict the footage, a video that has since been banned in New Zealand and sharing or viewing such material is deemed a crime. And yet Hollywood is recreating the massacre minute by minute in graphic detail to ominous music of all things, this is no better if not worst than the terrorists livestream itself. Do they have no compassion or even pity for the people that died there?

NUMBER THREE: 17 pages of the massacre and then the rest of the script is about Jacinda Ardern and the governments response to the attack and the unity of the nation and the outpouring of love from the country “They are Us”

In my opinion this is grandstanding at its finest. As it only happened a few years ago i remember what the country was like how shocked we all were that this even happened and here of all places, we were a people used to our safety we watched terrorism spread around the world but the notion of it happening here? unthinkable. The People were a mess, at first there was confusion and interest in what was going on? then as the news cameras rolled and the stories began to flow there was mass shock. people couldn’t believe it. Amongst the wider public there was never fear in the way you would expect, its hard to describe but the best way i can put it is there was fear but not of the terrorists but only of the consequences of their acts.

What followed was anger as social media erupted with messages relaying the hashtag #TheyAreUs a rallying cry to those who weren’t Muslim a way to vent the frustration of the situation and show support to the victims families. The Prime Minister famously stating

“And those values, I can assure you, will not and cannot be shaken by this attack,” speaking of the countries compassion and kindness towards diversity

“You may have chosen us, but we utterly reject and condemn you.

NUMBER FOUR: The terrorist. In the movie the terrorist is depicted throughout the movie as a black silhouette never hearing his voice or seeing his face, the writer invigorates the terrorists presence depicting scenes as more ominous and terrifying having only a black silhouette and a thunderous rain of gunfire.

Opponents of the film say the messaging within this movie and the writers portrayal of the killer will inspire white-supremacists to carry out further attacks, the terrorist wrote i believe a 30 page? manifesto detailing his white supremacist ideologies a document that has also been banned.

NUMBER FIVE: The Families. 51 people died gunned down like a Cod livestream… 40+ injured

A tragedy so fresh in the minds of the affected, if you were them would you want to see a movie that shows your son, your husbanded gunned down? how could they ever want to see that? there bodies haven’t even decomposed in the ground? Its traumatizing we all surely know how hurt they must be thinking of their fathers or mothers last moments being dramatized for millions to see as entertainment. The people truly felt this attack, truly felt for the victims more than any of us could have imagined, we were not kind to our Muslim citizens before this, perhaps polite on the surface but we were not kind. But when this happened their was an unexplainable sadness from all of New ZealandWere sorry” we said “you should have been safe here

But what now the movie is set to be made, we are a democracy so its not like anyone can really stop it, but i wonder what this movies purpose even is? Is it just to make money? to be showered in accolades and awards? Personally i think these people just care too little about the actual events and the writer a New Zealander by the way, seems so wrapped up in this attempt to glorify the nation, that he has forgotten that feeling we all shared, the moment where we felt as devastated as the victims, because at the end of the day no matter how much support and love we give, their families will never return… they are just people like anyone else who love their family like anyone else, this is a day they will never forget and its “cruel to remind them in such a way.
